After Brooklyn native Luis Collazo completely dominated Victor Ortiz Thursday night in New York, "The People’s Champ" -- a name he earned from growing up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn -- says he’s now ready to take on one of the best fighter’s professional boxing has ever seen. Disposing of his opponent at 2:59 of the second round, the welterweight-fighting Collazo would love nothing more than to take on Floyd Mayweather Junior in his hometown of Brooklyn. Citing Barclays Center in Brooklyn as the preferred host, the 32-year-old former Welterweight Champion said after the match that even though he believes his opponent overlooked him, the victory opens the door for a showdown with Floyd.
“I got his attention when I landed that hook and he didn't get up,” Collazo said. “Absolutely he overlooked me. I'm just a competitive person. I don't like losing and I took care of business. I want Floyd Mayweather, in New York City, I want what the fans want! I want him to come to the Barclays Center here in Brooklyn. It opens the door. Like I said before, the fight here was my future and now it’s going to open my future.”
Matched up with the 27-year-old Ortiz -- who returned to the ring for the first time since breaking his jaw 19 months ago -- Collazo used the style of fighting that has helped him claim four-straight victories and 35 wins in 40 career matches, including 18 KOs. Understanding that Ortiz would come out extremely aggressive in return bout, "The People’s Champ" used the combination of his skills and overall intensity to walk away the victor. The final blow was a short right hook that knocked Ortiz down to the mat and sealed the win.
“Coming into this ring, I was excited,” Collazo said. “Performing in Brooklyn in front of all my fans, in front of people I grew up with. To represent from the Borough of Brooklyn, I’m just stoked. I knew he was going to come out aggressive, that’s the type of fighter he is. I just wanted to stay on my game plan and see where he came from. I was seeing shots coming wide open. I’m not a big puncher, but a hook on a hooker is deadly. It was nice and short. Boom! A lot of people say I can’t punch, but I don’t know.”
Collazo now hopes to battle Floyd Mayweather Jr. on the biggest stage in front of his home fans. Mayweather -- who was recently named the Sugar Ray Robinson Fighter of the Year for the second time -- owns a career record of 45-0-0, with 26 wins decided by KO.
