The son of controversial Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan is reportedly under investigation by a law enforcement agency in Illinois. 52-year-old Mustapha Farrakhan is a part-time police officer in Harvey, Ill., near Chicago. However, Farrakhan has reportedly not worked in four years.

Kevin McClain, executive director of the Illinois Police Standards and Training Board, told the Associated Press that they are investigating Mustapha Farrakhan for allegedly what amounts to misuse of his police authority. Farrakhan is a "volunteer" police officer, according to Chief Denard Eaves.

"Officer Farrakhan assists the Police Department with community relations, in its quest to strengthen ties between police and the community," Eaves said.

However, the son of the controversial leader does have rights to an unmarked police car in his capacity. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Mustapha was using his police car to assist his father, Louis Farrakhan, in entering and exiting venues at which he was speaking.

The elder Farrakhan, born Louis Wolcott, is a former calypso singer who joined the Nation of Islam in 1955 and rose steadily through its ranks to become its leader. He has been criticized for his remarks against Jews and white America.

Mustapha Farrakhan's vehicle, that was allegedly emitting police warning lights, was registered to the city of Harvey after a check of the license plate during one of Louis Farrakhan's appearances.

John Milner, chair of the Illinois Police Chief's Association, asked rhetorically why the incidents were able to happen: "Why are Harvey taxpayers paying for a vehicle to protect someone who doesn't even live in their community?"

The Nation of Islam and Mayor Eric Kellogg declined comment.
