Following a recent MLB game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, 24-year-old Jonathan Denver was stabbed to death during a fight not far from AT&T Park in San Francisco. Walking away from the stadium with his father and brother, Denver got in a verbal confrontation with others and the incident quickly turned violent. Stabbed at around 11:30 p.m., ET, Denver succumbed to the wounds after being taken to the San Francisco General Hospital. Due to last night's stabbing, Giants officials are wondering whether or not to increase security for Thursday's game.
Not taking long to identify possible suspects, ESPN indicates that local police arrested two in the stabbing death of Denver. Only saying that the two individuals are in custody, San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr did not provide any additional information regarding the arrests. Investigators are now looking into whether or not Denver's clothing may have played a role in his despicable death. The 24-year-old was wearing Dodgers clothing and due to the fact that L.A. and San Francisco are big rivals, a fight may have been started by a fan upset that Los Angeles is headed to the playoffs while the Giants have already been eliminated from postseason contention.
"He was just a very nice young man. He wanted to be a plumber," Denver's employer Cas Smith told the Washington Post. "He was very promising. He was one of our best apprentices. It's sad."
Giants spokesperson Staci Slaughter also said that the entire organization is extremely upset with the incident that took place and while they're still trying to figure out what happened, they remain concerned for each person involved.
"We're obviously very concerned about the situation," Slaughter said. "We are trying to understand exactly what happened."
While the season has not gone according to plan for the defending World Series champion Giants, the organization certainly does not like to hear tragic events taking place at or near their ballpark. In a show of support for Jonathan Denver and his family, the Giants issued a statement via Twitter expressing their deepest condolences while noting that they're doing everything they can to assist San Francisco police.
We were deeply saddened to learn of last night's horrific incident that occurred several blocks from the ballpark and resulted in the tragic death of 24-year old Jonathan Denver. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
While details are still emerging, we want to be clear that there is absolutely no place in our community for this type of senseless violence. The Giants are working w/ SFPD to step up enforcement in and around the ballpark tonight and throughout the rest of this final home stand.
We will also observe a moment of silence in memory of Mr. Denver before tonight's game.
