Former Democratic congressman Peter Deutsch has announced his endorsement of Donald Trump, citing the security of Israel as the driving force in his step out of party lines.
Deutsch was a featured guest in a collaborative press call put on by the Trump campaign and Republican National Committee in commemoration of the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Israel. On the call, Deutsch, who is Jewish, told listeners, "I feel very comfortable today publicly announced that I'm endorsing Donald Trump to be reelected as president and I'm planning on voting for him on Nov. 5."
The six-time South Florida congressman now spends a significant portion of his time with his family in Israel, and expressed grave concerns for the Biden administration's approach to the Middle East, particularly Iran.
"Their policies towards Iran make the world a dramatically less safe place," said Deutsch, adding that the Biden-Harris administration "would make Neville Chamberlain proud."
Deutsch expressed support for Trump's stance that the U.S. should have taken an offensive position in the wake of the deadly Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, and should be tougher on Iran.
"Iran, their enemy is not just Israel - their enemy remains the United States. They still want to destroy the United States," Deutsch said.
He went on to state that he believes the president of the United States' most important job is "trying to retain peace in the world," and that "world peace" is his underlying motivation in the upcoming election.
Trump has courted Jewish voters, including a recent event the campaign called, "Fighting Antisemitism in America." He highlighted his administration's Pro-Israel accomplishments before claiming that, "In my opinion, the Jewish people would have a lot to do with a loss," in reference to the 2024 election.
Deutsch is not alone among politicians planning to defect from their party's presidential pick in November, though Republicans pledging support for the Harris campaign have garnered more publicity in recent days.
"Every American, hopefully, will come to the same conclusion that I have, that President Trump should become the next president the United States."
