A young man attempted to take his own life, assuming that his girlfriend had broken up with him after she hung up his call, authorities said.
The victim, who remains unidentified, tried to kill himself by slitting his wrists near his girlfriend's residence in the Pandua area of India’s West Bengal on Monday night, July 25.
According to reports, the young man was in a love relationship with a woman he met online five months ago.
On Monday, the girlfriend allegedly hung up his call as she was busy with some work. Her actions enraged the victim, leading him to assume that she had broken up with him.
The young man reportedly went near his lover's residence and slit both his wrist with a razor blade, which was recovered by the police. He then allegedly clicked pictures of the injuries and send them to his girlfriend.
Locals, who found the victim lying on the ground and bleeding profusely, rushed him to the Pandua Rural Hospital for treatment. The hospital authorities alerted the police immediately.
Responding officers spoke to the victim who told them that he is a hotel employee from Kalyani, a municipality in the state.
The victim claimed that he was feeling very lonely after his grandmother, who brought him up since his parents' separation, died a few days ago, and his mother married someone else, reports said.
He told the officers that he was in love with a girl he met online but she has left him too.
However, when investigators spoke to the girl, she claimed there was no problem in their relationship and that she is shocked to know that he took such an extreme step because she hung up his call.
Police said they believe the victim took this step out of fear of losing the girl.
There have been no updates on the current health condition of the victim, but sources say he is expected to survive.
In a similar incident, a 32-year-old mother of one allegedly hanged herself to death after her new husband, whom she got married to secretly, refused her request to move in with him.
The unidentified victim was found hanging dead from a ceiling fan inside her parents' home in Dera Bassi's Mubarakpur neighborhood on Monday, July 18.
Investigators said they recovered a suicide note from the scene. The note, purportedly written by the victim, blamed her male friend for her death.
The victim and the man were in a relationship for the last six years, since the time she divorced her first husband for unknown reasons.
According to SI Kulwant Singh, the victim and the accused had reportedly married but were living separately to keep the relationship a secret.
The victim, who had been living at her parent’s house with her 8-year-old daughter, was repeatedly requesting her secret husband to let her move into the same property with him, reports said.
After her repeated efforts to convince him failed, the victim decided to take the extreme step, according to police.
The accused was arrested and charged for abetment following a complaint by the victim's brother. He is now being held on police remand.
