Log Cabin Republicans, which is the LGBT Republican group, look up to the former First Lady Melania Trump for supporting the gay community.
Over the weekend, they presented her with their annual Spirit of Lincoln Award at Mar-A-Lago Club, Florida. Melania was the guest of honor at the event, she was celebrated for making history as “the first Republican First Lady to ever support our community."
Donald Trump’s former ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, said that from the moment he met Melania at the beginning of the Trump administration, he knew the LGBT community "had an advocate," according to PinkNews. He shared that he is not sure where Melania got "her passion for equality, but it was there, and it was real," and praised her by calling her the "most international First Lady" America has ever had as she speaks multiple languages, understands several cultures and appreciates diversity.
Without mentioning what she’s actually done for LGBT Americans, other Log Cabin Republicans also praised her, with one saying, “Let’s be honest, the gays love First Lady Melania Trump." While another admired her fashion sense and smartness, another called her a great friend to the LGBT community and an inspiration to many.
Meanwhile, Melania took to Twitter to thank the Log Cabin Republicans for the Spirit of Lincoln award saying, “Thank you for recognizing my work and for highlighting those who have exemplified a commitment to the LGBT community."
When she accepted the award, her husband looked at her adoringly and with pride.
But, Trump didn't seem to be too supportive of the community as during his term as President, he introduced a number of legislation that was not good for the community, reported Star Observer. Three years ago, the former US President signed an order to ban most trans individuals from military service and in 2019, he didn't allow US embassies to fly the pride flag.
However, during his final year in office, Melania had claimed that Trump was the most pro-gay president the US has ever had, and she said that she was shocked to discover that some of the powerful people had tried to "paint my husband as anti-gay or against equality. Nothing could be further from the truth."
