A horrific five-car crash has left a Mexican family of six dead in Lodi, California -- a city located a little south of Sacramento with a population of 60,000. The victims of the accident are reportedly from the city of Cocula in Guerrero, Mexico according to Mariana Carine Tyler from the Mexican Consulate in Sacramento. The victims of the Lodi car crash who have passed away have been identified to be: Luis Miranda, 30; Viviana Rodriguez, 31, and her unborn child; Irving Miranda, 11; Jose Miranda, 7; and Stephanie Miranda, 5. In addition to the six deceased victims, there is also a 9-year-old boy who is in the hospital in critical condition. Tyler has revealed that while the three children attended Lodi schools, she is unsure whether the children were born here or in Mexico.
The victims of the accidents were in an extended-cap pickup when they were struck in a busy intersection by a SUV. The driver, whose name has not been released, has been hospitalized as well and according to police Lt. Sierra Bruscia, the investigation is still ongoing. Bruscia stated that "it's definitely a very traumatic incident," adding that the crash may be a criminal investigation and it is unclear if the victims were wearing their seatbelts. An eyewitness revealed to KCRA-TV that the driver swerved through cars at high speeds. "I approach and see this big old pile of mess, children laying out in the street, on the curb and bodies everywhere and vehicles totally messed up," said eyewitness Westley Ruyle.
Yula Ocampo, 15, told the Lodi News-Sentinel that Luis Miranda was her uncle and that her entire family was furious. "The family is mad," she said. "It's not fair that the man who caused the accident is in the hospital, while my cousins and aunt and uncle are dead." The Mayor of Lodi, Alan Nakanishi, has even spoken up about about the Lodi car crash. "I was very saddened," he said. "It's the worst thing that's happened to Lodi this year. I'm very saddened for the loss -- especially for the pregnant lady and the children that died. It's a black day for the city."
