Lionel Messi has agreed terms on a new contract, Barcelona has announced. According to newspaper “El País,” he will receive a raise from 13-million euros to 20-million euros net a season, and that is not including incentives. He reaches a $50 million dollar a year deal.
Barca board had even considered putting the star athlete up for sale to use the 250 million euros for a complete renovation of the team. Teams interested in Messi included Manchester City, Chelsea, Paris saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and also Real Madrid.
A statement issued on the club’s official website read, “FC Barcelona has reached an agreement to adjust the terms in the contract binding Leo Messi to the club as a professional first team players. The revised and updates contract will be signed over the next few days.”
Gerardo Martino, Barca coach, said, “These are matters that will help bring tranquility for Leo and for the club. Obviously anything that is good for him is good for us. It will help him to bring us more on the pitch. Whatever is good for Leo is good for Barcelona.”
The four-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored 354 goals at Barcelona. Messi is seven goals shy of becoming the Spanish league’s all-time scorer. He has scored 28 goals this season.
