Lionel Messi has come a step closer to capturing yet another of football's biggest records. With his hat-trick at Bernabéu stadium, the Barcelona striker has beaten the 234 goals set by Mexico's Hugo Sánchez to become the second-best striker of all time, with only Telmo Zarrra ahead of him in the BBVA League standings. He has also become the top Clasico scorer with a late goal in the first half of the match against Real Madrid, beating Alfredo di Stéfano's previous record.

With 236 total goals in the BBVA League, Lionel Messi no occupies the second spot in the amount of goals scored in the history of the League, a position occupied until now by Hugo Sánchez (234). Messi only has the record of Telmo Zarra ahead of him: Zarra has a record of 252 goals, a feat that Messi is rapidly approaching. The historic triumph from the Argentine comes after last week he surpassed previous record holders Raúl (228) and Di Stéfano (227).

Last week, Lionel Messi, the Barcelona striker became the all time leading scorer with 371 goals in all competitions including friendlies. He broke the record at Camp Nou. He passed Paulino Alcántara to become the greatest goal scorer of all time. He is officially the greatest goal scorer in FC Barcelona history. The Argentine scored in the 63rd minute against Osasuna.He netted a hat trick when Barcelona beat their opponent 7-0. He is marching into the history books, one goal at a time.
