Lionel Messi has been awarded the 'Golden Boot', the highest award given to players of the European Leagues. This makes the FC Barcelona striker the first player ever to win the award three times in the history of the game. The award is given to the player who scores the most goals in a single season: the Argentinian genius scored 46 goals for Barça. Messi also won the award in 2010 and 2012 with 34 and 50 goals respectively.

Lionel Messi has been touted often as 'the greatest player of all time.' And this latest award confirms Messi as a deserving candidate for the title. The prize was awarded by Hristo Stoichov who hoped Messi would go on to achieve a similar feat next year - at the World Cup. "I hope he recovers soon and returns with the same strength as always," said the Bulgarian. "Only God knows where he will reach."

Meanwhile Messi did not comment on when he would return to the game following his injury. "My aim has never been to win individual prizes," said the Argentine. "My goal is to return, return well, and try to strengthen my whole body so that nothing happens to me, so I can play with calm, although the phsyical always depends on God."

Messi also has four Golden Balls, the award for the season's best player - it is another record Messi holds all on his own.
