Lionel Messi is undoubtedly one of the best soccer players of all time and his life struggles will soon be exhibited on the big screen. Spanish director Alex De La Iglesia will begin shooting a documentary focused on the childhood of the Barcelona star. "I feel that that he is a great subject because of he's enigmatic and at his level he is admirable and honest," the filmmaker said. "It is a humble documentary, about the soccer player that tells the story of his life through interviews with the people that love him.
"The Oxford Murders" director has already paid a visit to Rosario, Argentina where Messi grew up. The former Argentine player Jorge Valdano is writing the script of the film. "Jorge is a great writer. He has many books. He is an intelligent person, sane and very interesting at a personal level," De La Iglesia said. The non-fiction work has no title as of yet and it will be De La Iglesia's first foray in the genre. "We all have to work. I would love to live off of my films, but I also make commercials and this documentary, but I have no regrets."
Alex De La Iglesia's newst project is "Words With God's," an anthology feature comprised of multiple shorts with religion as the central theme. The project is helmed by Mexican director Guillermo Arriaga and includes works by Hector Babenco, Bahman Ghobadi, Amos Gitai, Emir Kusturica and more. Demian Bichir, Sarai Givaty, Juan Fernández, Inma Cuesta, Pepón Nieta and an elite group of actors are set to star. Iglesia's piece is titled "The Confession" which hit close to home as he was raised Catholic saying, "I think that religion has marked me like everyone that lives in a Catholic country. I am Catholic. A special Catholic with an unorthodox vision of things, but I am Catholic."
