Despite stating very publicly last month that team officials should not have to sweeten the contract of Lionel Messi once again, Barcelona vice president Javier Faus indicated recently that the verbal feud between the two figures is in the past and that the four-time Ballon d'Or winner deserves to be the top player in the game. Hinting at the idea of offering Messi a record-breaking contract earlier this week, Faus said he is happy that the war of words between himself and the international superstar is over while backing the words of club president Sandro Rosell, who said recently that the club will offer Messi a new contract that will make him the world's top paid player.

“It is something which is happily resolved now, as Leo has said on a number of occasions,” Faus said of the previous verbal exchange between himself and Messi. "There was no bad intent meant from me, or from Leo. Messi is the best player in the world and he has been that for the last five years, whatever the awards say. He will continue playing for Barca. I would second the president's words -- he is the best player in the world and he deserves the best economic treatment.”

The 26-year-old goal-scorer inked a new deal with Barca in February but after 2013 Ballon d'Or Award Cristiano Ronaldo renewed his contract with La Liga rival Real Madrid in recent time, Messi lost his spot as the world's highest-earning player. Recently returning from another thigh injury, Leo Messi hopes to regain the form that has propelled him to the title of world's best player. His constant presence on the pitch will also be needed if the La Liga giants are to hold off league threats in Atletico Madrid and Ronaldo's Real Madrid. Through 20 matches this season, Barcelona is tied atop the Spanish Primera Division with Atletico while Real Madrid sits one point back.
