Early this morning the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C was found to have been vandalized with green paint. The green paint was found around 1:20 this morning by officers with the National Park Service.
The Lincoln Memorial is open 24-hours a day normally but will be closed until the paint is removed. There was no message left by the vandals as to why they might have done this, be it a political statement or other wise.
The green paint was found at the base of the Lincoln Memorial and on the floor near the statute of President Lincoln. Clean up crews have been dispatched to remove the green paint. It is unclear how long the clean up will take.
Carol Johnson a spokeswoman with the National Park Service told CBS News, "It breaks my heart that somebody would do this. This is devastating to us."
There have been three other vandalisms at the National Mall, all took place at the Vietnam Memorial.
Surveillance cameras watch the Lincoln Memorial; police plan to review the video footage in order to find the vandals.
