It was just a matter of time before James Corden took his vocal skills and love of singing to Broadway, Now that he will be hosting the Tony Awards on Sunday, June 12, it just made sense to get together with some of the biggest names in musical theatre for his latest edition of “Carpool Karaoke.”
“Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda was first in line and the two kicked off the skit with the show’s opening number, smoothly transitioning into the super speedy, Marquis de Lafayette (played by Daveed Diggs) rap, “Guns and Ships.”
Next, the car pool became a party when Corden stopped to pick up more Broadway stars, including the legendary Audra McDonald, “Modern Family” actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and “30 Rock’s” Jane Krakowski.
Now that all five were in the car, it was obviously time to play a classic such as “Seasons of Love” from “Rent,” and the actors' response was exactly like anyone else’s: “Awwww,” they all went. “That was the most Broadway response to hearing an opening chord,” Corden said before they burst out singing.
The British actor could not pass up the opportunity to ask for advice for his upcoming hosting gig at the TONYs. McDonald was the first to say, “Just have fun. It’s a long evening and everyone is there to have fun.” Ferguson also jumped in and told Corden it is “the nicest audience” he’ll ever have.
“Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” from the “Jersey Boys” soundtrack came up next, which they had a blast interpreting before the big, must-sing finale. Seriously, it cannot be a Broadway karaoke without “Les Miserable,” which is why the five musical enthusiasts belted out the most splendid rendition of “One More Day,” giving us enough chills and joy to hold us over until this Sunday’s award show.
