Last month, Geoff Payne undertook the heartbreaking task no parent wants to face. He had to repatriate the remains of his son, Liam Payne after he died on October 16 after falling from the third floor of the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires.
The British artist's body was released two days earlier by Argentine authorities after the final autopsy results and was embalmed according to international standards for transporting human remains.
Liam's body was placed in a coffin, protected by a black box and sturdy plastic wrapping. It was loaded into the cargo hold of a British Airways plane at Jorge Newbery International Airport after the standard inspection, set to take him back to London.
Meanwhile, Geoff completed the usual international customs procedures, accompanied by Paul Higgins, one of the main bodyguards for Liam and the other members of One Direction during their time together.
Just as he cared for his son, Higgins supported Geoff through every step of the process to bring Liam home, where his funeral will take place.
In Great Britain, the rest of the family awaits Geoff and Liam: his wife and Liam's mother, Karen Payne, and his two daughters, Ruth and Nicola—also, Bear, the late singer-songwriter's only son, who is seven years old.
What Will Liam Payne's Funeral Be Like?
The Payne family has not made any statements about the artist's funeral plans. Geoff is the only one who has been seen publicly, spotted handling affairs in Buenos Aires and visiting the place where his son died twice.
Before departing for England, Liam's father spoke with fans who have been tending to the tributes left at the CasaSur hotel's doors in his son's honor.
Some sources identifying themselves as friends of the artist have claimed that a star-studded funeral is being prepared at a cathedral in London. Still, as of this publication, no plans have been officially announced. We will keep you informed.
Meanwhile, fans continued to track the flight carrying the artist using flight applications, and Argentine authorities are continuing their investigations into his death. This week, the homes of two hotel employees were searched, and a man close to Liam Payne in Argentina is under investigation.
