The amount of alcohol in Liam Payne's bloodstream at the time of his death largely exceeded the threshold considered potentially lethal, an Argentine prosecutor's office said.
Concretely, Payne had 2.7 grams of alcohol per liter of blood. The Cleveland Clinic explains in its website that a level of 0.40% or higher already poses a risk of coma or death from respiratory arrest.
The office added that the former One Direction member also had "cocaine metabolites, methylecgonine, benzoylecgomine, cocaethylene and the medication sertraline" an antidepressant, when he fell from the third floor of Hotel CasaSur in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires.
The details surrounding Payne's death continue to surface as the investigation into the matter moves forward. The latest development in the case concerned the acquittal of Rogelio "Roger" Nores, an Argentine businessman and friend of Payne's.
Nores, who had been accused of Manslaughter, is now cleared, along with two other hotel employees. Following his acquittal, Nores told Rolling Stone: "Glad this is finally over. I'm happy I'm now going to be able to travel to the UK and say goodbye to my friend."
However, two individuals accused of selling cocaine to Payne before his fatal fall remain in custody and are still facing trial. His death remains under intense scrutiny. Reports indicate he fell from a height of approximately 13 to 14 meters (43 to 46 feet). Buenos Aires emergency services director Alberto Crescenti stated that Payne suffered "severe injuries incompatible with life," leaving "no chance of resuscitation."
