The 2014 Formula 1 season with the mighty Mercedes team is Lewis Hamilton's greatest opportunity to win the championship since he won his first with McLaren in 2008. Now, rumors suggest McLaren is approaching Lewis with an offer to rejoin the team where his career began.
Lewis Hamilton is a favorite for the 2014 title, but two DNF's mean he trails teammate Nico Rosberg by 29 points. Tensions between the teammates, or rivals, were at its highest when Rosberg drove off the track after grabbing pole at Monaco qualifying, which resulted to a red flag before Hamilton could put in a final hot lap. What's more, Hamilton also suffered a poor qualifying result in last week's Austrian GP, but managed to fight his way through the field to finish second.
Mercedes has won every single race this season except for Canada and has clearly produced the fastest car on the grid. As per the Mercedes contract, Lewis Hamilton will drive for the team until 2015. However, for the first time in his Formula 1 career, Lewis Hamilton stands to lose the championship to his teammate. Should this scenario unfold, incredible frustration may cause Hamilton to seek drive opportunities elsewhere. This is where McLaren steps into the picture.
"There has been contact between McLaren and Lewis Hamilton about a possible return to the team that nurtured his genius," Daily Mail reported following Hamilton's DNF at the Canadian GP.
"The team [McLaren] have opened very tentative dialogue with Lewis Hamilton, in case the psychological scars of this year’s title fight at Mercedes become too great," The Telegraph reported.
Nevermind for a second the potential dreams unfulfilled at Mercedes. What could McLaren offer Lewis Hamilton beyond a change of scenery? Slowly but surely, McLaren boss Ron Dennis is putting together the pieces necessary for McLaren's rebirth for the 2015 season.
First, Ron Dennis has successfully poached Red Bull aerodynamicist Peter Prodromou. Red Bull's superior aero has positioned the team just shy of race contention against Mercedes despite the inferior Renault engines. Not only will the McLaren aerodynamics department gain new leadership, but McLaren is also betting on problems at Red Bull caused by Prodromou's absence.
The second piece of the puzzle will be the new Honda/McLaren power units. However, Honda will have to prove that its engines have title-winning potential. At this point, the performance of the Honda engines are unknown.
"We've got Peter Prodromou joining us in September so that will be a big step," said Ron Dennis. "It will bolster our revitalised aero team, so I'm not concerned about aero performance next year, it will come right.
"We've got a steep curve with Honda, but at the end of the day we were with them for five years [between 1988 and 1992] and won 50% of the races. So I'm not worried about getting there with Honda, it's just going to be a bit challenging at the beginning. This is motor racing, it goes up and down, you've just got to keep your head down and keep working."
As far as Ron Dennis is concerned, McLaren could gain a significant edge in both power and aero for 2015. A driving talent like Lewis Hamilton might be the last piece of the puzzle
