Lena Dunham is one of the most outspoken women in the entertainment world. Which is why, it was no surprise to find out she had publicly addressed “El País” on social media after realizing the publication had altered her body on their latest cover. “Oh hello El Pais! I am genuinely honored to be on your cover and so happy you licensed a pic by @ruvenafanador, who always makes me feel gorgeous. BUT this is NOT what my body has ever looked like or will ever look like – the magazine has done more than the average photoshop. So if you’re into what I do, why not be honest with your readers? Much love, Lena,” the “Girls” creator and star wrote on Instagram.
Back in September, Dunham revealed she was finally embracing exercise and was trying to stick to it not to satisfy Hollywood’s society, with whom she has had an ongoing discussion about self-image, but to keep herself healthy. “When I see sh*ty comments, at this point they don’t even feel like they’re about me. Like, I don’t feel I need to lose 200 pounds or whatever these people are saying. I don’t feel that way about myself. I feel like I have better days, I have worse days, but I’m pretty happy in my own form,” the 29-year-old actress told ESPN.
Hours after Dunham’s online post gained attention, “El País” released a statement where they assert they used the original image by celebrity photographer Ruven Afanador. “Those who know us and follow our magazine know that we do not use Photoshop or other digital tools to change the appearance of people who are on our cover on inside the magazine,” the publication wrote. They continued by saying they released the image as received from the Corbis agency, and it included Afanador and Dunham’s publicist’s approval. The photo was allegedly originally shot for Entertainment Weekly.
Dunham’s fans have been showing their support on social media with comments such as, “I love you. Thank you for relentlessly keeping it real.” Recent sources report the alleged changes to the photograph could’ve been the work of Afanador himself. So far, he hasn’t commented.
