As many people know and understand - especially those who are constant focuses of various media outlets - material posted on-line and to social media outlets can be viewed by almost anyone. Popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest allow people to share parts of their personal lives through status updates, videos and pictures and while these sites certainly give people the freedom to promote their everyday lives, certain postings don't always receive a positive response. Just ask Miami Heat star LeBron James.
Over the weekend, James and his buddies were on their way to see Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z perform in Miami. Posting a video of the evening to his Instagram page and a status on Twitter, LeBron and company seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.
Though this is clearly a normal activity for many people - including James who is currently enjoying the NBA offseason after winning a second-consecutive championship - the reason the four-time MVP is in some hot water is because he and his friends used a police escort to get to the concert. Police transportation takes away from the important work officers are expected to perform and therefore is a violation in Miami.
James apparently enjoyed the services of an off duty police officer who happened to be working the event at Sun Life Stadium. Though the exact police department providing the services was not decipherable from James' video, Miami-Dade Police Maj. Nancy Perez said the occurrence was inexcusable and a violation of the law.
"He received a call that LeBron James was stuck in traffic and to facilitate him to get him to the next intersection, which he did," Maj. Perez told Local 10 News. "He drove in the opposite lane, which is against policy, so that's where the problem comes in. He just took (James) from one intersection to the next intersection, which is really less than even a mile. We're looking into the fact of who notified this officer and who told him to take LeBron James to the next intersection."
A complete statement from the Miami-Dade police department backed up the words of Nancy Perez as well, indicating that an investigation is underway. Though correct safety precautions were taken, these escorts cannot become common occurrences.
It has been brought to our attention that a video was posted on the internet by LeBron James, a professional basketball player, where it shows him being escorted onto the property of Sun Life Stadium.
Upon further investigation, it has been confirmed that Miami-Dade Police facilitated Mr. James from one intersection to another in the adjacent area of the stadium. His was not a scheduled escort and although all safety precautions were taken, the department has identified these actions as violated department policies.
LeBron and the Heat open their season on October 29 against the Chicago Bulls.
