Since the McLaren MP4-12C started production last year, the new Woking-based sports car company has steadily updated and refined its mid-engine supercar.
Yesterday, an exclusive McLaren Special Operations catalog leaked images of a very special limited edition McLaren MP4-12C Project Alpha. According to reports, only six Project Alpha units will be produced specifically for the McLaren Chicago dealership in response to customer demands
Despite the bold "Project Alpha" designation, the six specialty vehicles will remain mechanically unchanged from the standard MP4-12C sports cars save an updated 2013-spec exhaust system for a marginal power boost. The most significant change to the McLaren MP4-12C Project Alpha is its aero modification, which are the new louvers over the front wheels. Other changes include a gloss black finish over the roof, front splitter, rear spoiler, and the inside of the wheels. Inside, Mclaren updates the interior with more carbon fiber and Alcantara. Project Alpha plaques and badges indicate its exclusivity
McLaren will offer the MP4-12C Project Alpha over a choice of white, orange, or gray, producing only two examples of each color. Valued at $335,000, the MP4-12C Project Alpha costs $65,000 more than a standard MP4-12C sports car, Despite the steeper premium, four of the six limited edition Project Alphas are already called for and we expect the remaining two examples to go soon as well.
Despite the special model designation and the low production numbers, the Project Alphas only received relatively modest updates rather than major bespoke development. We expect many components from Project Alpha, including louvers over the front wheels, will eventually make it to standard MP4-12C models in the future.
