Leading Los Angeles City Council Candidate Says 'F--k the Police' in Meeting with College Students

When asked about her stance on abolishing the police, a Los Angeles City Council candidate responded with "f--k the police," a reference to an N.W.A. song.

In the leaked audio from Oct. 17, a Cal State Los Angeles student asked Ysabel Jurado, an LA City Council candidate, "As someone who's, myself, pro-abolishment of police, where do you stand on the spectrum?"

"Yeah, what's the rap verse? 'F--k the police.' That's how I see them," Jurado responded. "And Rage Against the Machine. What is that song? If you want to...," she added, seemingly alluding to the rock band's song, "Killing in the Name," according to the Westside Current.

Jurado is running to unseat District 14 councilmember Kevin De León, who assumed office in 2020 and is supported by the Los Angeles Police Department Union. He called Jurado's comment "disrespectful."

"When you say, 'F--k the police,' it's so immature, highly illogical and irresponsible," De León told KTLA 5.

He added communities need to work with police in all neighborhoods to combat crime.

Jurado defended her response. In a statement released by her camp to Westside Current, she wrote, "I quoted a lyric from a song that's been part of a larger conversation on systemic injustice and police accountability for decades. But it was just a lyric." She added, "My commitment to public safety remains as strong as ever."
