A married woman hung herself to death in Uttar Pradesh while her husband and in-laws recorded a video of her act of committing suicide as proof of their innocence.
The appalling incident occurred in Muzaffarnagar on Sunday. According to the police, the 25-year-old woman’s in-laws huddled outside the room to shoot the video which was uploaded on social media with the hope that it would be widely shared, Hindustan Times reported.
The police swung into action after the video of the incident went viral on social media, arresting the woman's father-in-law Devendra and mother-in-law Savitri. The police search is underway to apprehend the deceased's husband Ashish and brother-in-law Sachin who have been missing since the incident, police told Times Now.
The video was shot from outside the room, according to the Superintendent of Muzaffarnagar, Arpit Vijayvargiya. The superintendent said the woman’s in-laws attempted to stop her from hanging herself.
The deceased is seen tying a noose in the video, with her blue dupatta (scarf), securing it, checking its grip before letting go, as a man, most likely her father-in-law, says in Hindi, she hanged herself.
The woman’s father Anil Kumar said that Devendra and his family were demanding dowry from Komal that had led to a family feud and bitterness. “I had given Rs 5 lakh and a bike to his family at the time. But his father Devendra, mother Savita, and brother Sachin were not happy. About six months ago, they beat up Komal and drove her out of the house. The elders of the village sent her back," Anil Kumar wrote in the complaint letter to the police.
The complaint that was filed 2 months ago also stated that Komal's in-laws demanded Rs 1.2 lakh and threatened to get her husband Ashish married to someone else if they didn’t receive the money. The woman and Ashish had tied the knot in September 2019.
Muzaffarnagar's Senior Superintendent of Police, Abhishek Yadav told India Today that a case has been registered against the accused, after Anil Kumar's complaint, under sections 498A, 304B, 506 of the IPC and sections 3 and 4 of the dowry prohibition act.
