Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst was arrested on unlawful sex charges a mere two weeks after giving birth to a baby that was allegedly fathered by a Southern California high school student. Carl Baker of the Redlands police department announced that the 28-year-old high school teacher was arrested on Monday after having unlawful sex with a 16-year-old, for whom she acted as adviser.

Administrators at the Citrus Valley High School in Redlands, California contacted police on Monday, after receiving a tip from the male student's mother who had learned of the sexual relationship. The sexual relationship began last summer and continued for nearly a year, police said. The boy is now 17 and a father to a newborn baby. Whitehurst gave birth to the child June 18.

Redlands Unified School District Assistant Superintendent Sabine Robertson-Phillips said they were "recently made aware of allegations involving a high school student and teacher."

Police were immediately notified, prompting her arrest and Whitehurst being placed on administrative leave.

Whitehurst taught English to sophomores at Citrus Valley, where she also served as a Link Crew adviser and a Compact Careers Club adviser, according to The Redlands Daily Facts.
