Carlos M. Huertas is set to be sworn in as the new Fire Chief for Hartford Connecticut on Friday March 21. He has been a firefighter since June 18, 1980. According to Connecticut Latino News, he will be sworn in as the city’s 37th Fire Chief at Hartford City Hall tomorrow at noon: he will be Harford's 37th Fire Chief. He is a certified Fire Marshal by the State of Connecticut - this allows him to investigate fires and enforce Connecticut's fire safety codes as well as applying laws and regulations relating to Hartford's safety requirements.

Carlos Huertas began his career as a firefighter in 1980. Eight years later, hewas promoted to Lieutenant in November. In 1998, he was promoted to the position of Captain. According to Connecticut Latino News, :He then became the city’s Deputy Fire Chief in September, 2002, eventually becoming Deputy Emergency Manager. Huertas attended Central Connecticut State University, Hartford State Technical College, Albertus Magnus College and Manchester Community College."

Huertas' career has also taken him into the military. He served in the Air National Guard for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Tech Sergeant. He is certified by the U.S. Department of Defense as: Fire Officer 1, Fire Inspector, Fire Instructor, Airport Firefighter and Hazardous Materials Incident Commander. Huertas is also a former president of the Society of Latin American Firefighters. He has four children and is studying a Bachelor of Science in Fire Science at Columbia Southern University.
