LeBron James will continue to play professional basketball even though his years are numbered. For someone who has already made billions with more money coming in from his multitude of investments, there is no doubt that the 37-year-old player can buy almost anything money would allow him to.
But like other NBA players who wrap up their playing days, the four-time NBA champion could end up as an executive for an NBA team. But the case of James is quite different considering the money he has made. Hence, owning an NBA team and running it would be sensible.
James answered the question going around about him possibly owning and running his own NBA team. After the Lakers' preseason game against the Phoenix Suns, the 18-time All-Star made clear what he has in mind.
"It's the best fanbase in the world, and I would love to bring a team here at some point," James said.
He went on to address NBA commissioner Adam Silver directly, who is currently in Abu Dhabi.
"He probably sees every single interview and transcript that comes through from NBA players, so I want the team here Adam. Thank you."
It would be best to note that while his claim was deemed legitimate by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, it is not a matter that the league has on the table.
Television rights are reportedly the main concern right now. But once that is over, then perhaps Silver and the NBA may look into the possibility of expanding either to Las Vegas or Seattle.
James would follow the footsteps of Michael Jordan who initially had a stake with the Washington Wizards. “His Airness” eventually gave that up when he decided to unretire for the team.
At 37 and with no signs of slowing down, there is a chance James may be tempted to do the same. The four-time NBA MVP may want to take a different route – that of which is to decide on when it is time to walk away and then own an NBA franchise.
But for as long as the passion is there, that may not be the end of it all with James possibly still wanting to play and show the players of his potential team what it takes to win. At this point, anything is possible.
