The Los Angeles Lakers are looking for a new head coach and need all the help they can get. With top management clueless on how to go about it, former Lakers coach Phil Jackson is reportedly helping Los Angeles find the right one.
The Lakers have their work cut out for them in finding a new mentor. They fired Frank Vogel after three seasons after the Lakers' last two seasons did not exactly meet expectations.
Vogel helped the Lakers win their last title in 2019, a season marred by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, their journey went haywire from there despite taking in top names. That list included the likes of Marc Gasol and Russell Westbrook.
Jackson, who has 11 NBA titles under his belt (five of them with the Lakers), will reportedly advise the Lakers in its head coaching job journey, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported.
While that could make sense, fans are not entirely on board with the idea.
Fans shared their take on the move. One pointed out how the Lakers went with Vogel because Jackson and the crew had their hands all over the process.
Another fan pointed out how Jackson handled the New York Knicks. Named team president in 2014, Jackson failed to evolve the Knicks into a contender and ended up parting ways with the franchise in 2017.
The Lakers are hoping to find a new coach before the 2022 NBA Draft that happens on June 23. There have been a lot of names mentioned such as Quin Snyder and another former coach in Mike Brown.
Regardless, the Lakers want a coach with a strong voice that can command stars and vets. Finding the right person may be tough, especially with LeBron James around.
The four-time NBA champion is in the final year of his deal with the Lakers and re-signing him could very well hinge on who the next Lakers head coach would be.
