We might remember him as one of the contestants of Team Wisin & Yandel on the Mexican version of NBC’s renowned show “The Voice,” “La Voz … Mexico.” Gibran Martiz is originally from Veracruz, Mexico, and has been singing since he was 10 years old. However, it wasn’t until he turned 15, when he began taking music seriously and considering it a career option. His parents weren’t too happy with his choices but Gibran didn’t stop fighting for his dream. He sold Bibles so he could afford to buy his first guitar, and once he knew how to play, he started performing around.
Later on, he signed up for a music competition in Veracruz, and he kept working towards his goal until he finally got the chance of a lifetime: a scholarship to study music in the United States. Four years ago he formed a band with a friend and they call their music “Urban Pop,” which tells us why he chose Wisin & Yandel when they turned their chairs at the blind auditions instead of Alejandra Guzmán, who also wanted to work with Gibran.
After all his struggles to get where he is right now, it saddens us to say that he’s missing since Jan. 7, when he was removed from his residence in Veracruz by police officers who raided his home searching for him for no known reason. They fought with the young man and forced him inside the patrol, and ever since that day, there has been no sign of Gibran anywhere. His family has been searching for him but the police argument is that they “know nothing.” Gibran, 22, was accompanied by José Luis Martínez Hernández, who is also missing.
Erick Martiz, Gibran’s brother, posted an image on his Facebook profile of the alleged patrol unit who took his brother. “This is the patrol unit and its number (20-1178) in which my brother Gibran Martiz was taken away, and we still know nothing,” he wrote. The picture shows a clear view of the car and the number, which corresponds to the Veracruz state.
Social media has also echoed the search for Gibran and his friend, with Chilean musician Beto Cuevas tweeting, “Your prayers and support to find Gibran Martiz, ex-contestant of ‘La Voz … Mexico’ and last seen in Xalapa, Veracruz.” Also, the hashtag “DondeEstaGibran (Where is Gibran) was created and is making rounds on Twitter. We hope Gibran is found safe and sound and this whole case is just an unfortunate misunderstanding. And please, if you have any information about Gibran Martiz, do not hesitate in contacting us or the authorities.
