The transition of La La Anthony in the entertainment world has always been smooth, from being an MTV presenter she became a reality star, and then she made her way as an actress while at the same time becoming a successful fashion designer. However on a personal level, the story has been different.
The 38-year-old Puerto Rican-American actress graces Latina Magazine's Winter Issue cover looking gorgeous than ever. In the digital spread, La La explains how the dynamic is while co-parenting her 10-year-old son, Kiyan with NBA basketball player Carmelo Anthony, and addresses rumors of their relationship.
According to La La, she’s not a people pleaser anymore, and having hard times saying no just to be accepted belongs to the past. “I’m more secure now. I don’t need to be liked by everyone,” said the Power actress to Latina. “That was me in the beginning and throughout high school too. I just wanted everybody to like me, and then I realized that it’s never going to happen. I’m more accepting of this is who I am—take it or leave it.”
Since the news about the separation of La La and Carmelo broke, the rumors about their relationship haven’t stopped, and when you have children in between, everything is more difficult. “ It’s hard when your dad doesn’t live in the same place that you live anymore, for any 10-year-old that’s hard,” assures Anthony. “We try to make it as normal as possible and make access to his dad as frequent as possible. They have an incredible bond and Melo is an incredible dad. They’re always on FaceTime or on the phone planning their next trip.”
After separating, many couples, for the welfare of their kids, try to have a healthy friendship, which can often be confused in reconciliation, but La La makes it clear that what is happening in her love life is private and for now she has no intentions to feed petty rumors. “When you entertain [rumors] you give them power. Only I know what’s going on with my relationship and that’s what matters to me, not what everybody else thinks,” she said to Latina. “I’m trying to be an example for other women out there. You don’t have to feed into the bullshit. Deal with it quietly. When it’s time for the world to know, they’ll know. There’s no strength in playing it out publicly. What am I going to gain from that? I like the high road.”
La La also spoke about her a recurring role as LaKeisha Grant on Power. According to Latina, the actress tested for the role just like everyone else, even though she’s good friends with rapper and Power executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. “I auditioned a couple of times,” admits La La. “Relationships will get you in the door, but once you’re in, it’s up to you. This wasn’t an easy one to get.”
On a professional level, La La is currently focusing on her acting career and of course her brand new and very inclusive La La Anthony Denim Collection, which launched at Lord & Taylor, with sizes that range from 0 to 24. The line also includes other fashion-forward garments like dresses, bomber jackets, hoodies, and much more. "All extended sizes are the ones that sell the most. Curvy girls want great jeans and tops. So it makes me happy that this partnership with Lord & Taylor is killing it," the star says.
