Kylian Mbappe became the first PSG player to score five goals in a single match after he scored five goals for PSG against Pays de Cassel in the French Cup.
Kylian Mbappé scored five goals, including a 12-minute hat trick in the first half, against team Pays de Cassel in the French Cup on Monday, Jan. 23. Paris Saint-Germain won the match with a score of 7-0. Mbappe's five goals in the match set a record for the most goals by a player in a single game in PSG history. The performance took Mbappe's tally to 25 goals in 24 games this season. He also reached 196 goals in his PSG tenure and is just four goals behind club leader Edinson Cavani, who has scored 200 goals, Daily Mail reported.
Mbappe scored goals in the 29th, 35th, 40th, 56th, and 79th minutes of the game and also scored a hat trick. It was his first hat trick since France’s World Cup final defeat to Argentina on Dec. 18, 2022. He also assisted Neymar's goal in the 33rd minute of the game.
"We are happy," Mbappe said. "We came here to qualify and to respect this team by playing at our level."
“It was a great opportunity for them and also for us because it’s a reminder for us that we come from amateur football and it’s important to keep this link. Even if it’s only for one game.”
"That's what we did and we're very happy. Now we are going to prepare for the upcoming Ligue 1 schedule," Mbappe added.
PSG's Manager Christophe Galtier picked a relatively strong side with Mbappe, Neymar and Sergio Ramos included in his playing XI. However, he rested World Cup winner Lionel Messi for the game played at northern side Lens’ home stadium. Neymar and Carlos Soler also got on the scoresheet and scored the other two goals, Arab News reported.
Mbappe, who was named as PSG captain for the first time, opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a deflected strike off of a Nuno Mendes cross, before setting Neymar up for the second.
PSG will face Marseille on Monday, Jan. 30 with a trip to the French Cup quarterfinals on the line.
