The New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics will square off this Tuesday, April 23, for Game 2 at Madison Square Garden. The Celtics will try to even up the series after dropping Game 1 85-78 on Saturday. Game 2 will be on at 8 p.m., EST, on TNT.

Game 1 was marked by unusual displays of solidarity between the two cities, as Boston mourned those killed and injured in the Boston Marathon bombings. Prior to the beginning of the game, Paul Pierce and Carmelo Anthony addressed the crowd, units from the Boston and New York fire departments presented the American flag for the national anthem, and the Celtics wore patches on their jerseys reading "Boston Stands as One."

The heavily favored Knicks managed to win Game 1 despite a sluggish first half in which their offense consisted largely of isolation plays, with Knick guards unable to find big men coming off the pick and roll. They turned the ball over 8 times in the first half and shot 18 for 39 from the field. In the second half, the ball started moving -- most notably in a brilliant look by Carmelo Anthony to Kenyon Martin n the game's last minutes which put it out of reach for the Celtics. Anthony finished with 36 points. He and JR Smith got the lion's share of the Knicks' points, with 51 off of a combined 20-for-48 shooting night. In the end it was the Knicks' defense -- not so highly touted, this year -- which got them the win.

The Celtics led at the half but fell apart in the fourth quarter, in which they scored only 8 points, and turnovers plagued them through the game -- they finished with 21 in total. Jeff Green dumped in 20 points in the first half but went cold in the second, hitting just a single basket. And after the game, Coach Doc Rivers said his team stopped trusting one another, a comment widely taken to mean that the Celtics relied too heavily on the creative capacities of Paul Pierce. It remains to be seen if the Celtics bench will put on a better show in Game 2 than they did in Game 1, in which the Celtics starters scored 74 of the team's 78 points.

By contrast, the Knicks' bench was crucial to their victory, with Kenyan Martin and Jason Kidd logging long minutes and contributing a combined 18 points and 14 rebounds. It's likely they'll play a similar role in Game 2 in New York, while the Celtics try to put together some semblance of a productive offense. Look for Tyson Chandler to improve on his quiet Game 1 performance. The Knicks, who are leading a playoff series for the first time since 2001, will try to work out the kinks and recapture the momentum they had in the closing games of the regular season.
