It seems the highly anticipated title "Kingdom Hearts III" will now be developed on Epic Games Unreal Engine 4 according to the "KH3" director Tetsuya Nomura. The news comes from a recent interview with Famitsu where Nomura said the change was made for "various reasons" and despite a slow production start the title should see no more slowdown production time.
"Development is steadily proceeding as planned. Due to the impact of changing the game engine to Unreal Engine 4, which we did for various reasons, there is some difficulty rendering images. And with the full support of Epic Games, we'll be able to progress smoothly," said Nomura.
It was assumed before that "Kingdom Hearts III" and "Final Fantasy XV" would be using Square Enix's own in-house engine but that is no longer the case. The company has in the past used Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4 for such titles like "The Last Remnant" and Kotaku points out that the European branch of Enix has also used Epics Unreal Engine.
No release date has been announced for the title or even a launch window but recently at Tokyo's Game Show, Square Enix announced a plethora of news regarding "Final Fantasy XV" such as a demo launch window plus a new gameplay trailer. It was also revealed Nomura was stepping down from "FFXV" to focus on the third installment of "Kingdom Hearts." This definitely means we will start to see more updates on the production of the title and come that much closer to a release date.
