Two teenage girls reportedly started brawling at Michael R. White Elementary School, and their families joined in, in Cleveland, Oh.
The fight started over spilled punch at a kindergarten graduation ceremony Friday resulted in the arrest of eight people, authorities said. Police were called when one participant pulled out a pipe and another a hammer.
Jeff Johnson, City Councilman, lives across the street from the school. Which is in a blue-collar neighborhood overlooking the University Circle arts and museum district. He said the spilled punch set off the fight, with one person pulling out a pipe and another a hammer, leading school security officers to call police.
"Mouthing off, one thing leads to another and it spills out here," Johnson said.
At least 10 patrols cars went to the scene.
"It was a very chaotic scene," according to Drummond, who said the fight erupted as the ceremony was ending about 11 a.m. and then moved outside.
"You had adults fighting adults, juvies fighting juvies, and so forth," Cleveland police commander Wayne Drummond told reports. "You just had a melee here."
The first 911call came in after someone reported they heard gunfire but it turns out to be false.
No one was injured as a result of the brawl but the eight people arrested were primarily female and charged with aggravated rioting.
The elementary school was in lock down after the brawl erupted and parents were called in to pick up their children.
"It's just sad that it was marred by some adults who should be setting an example for the kids of how to behave but who did quite the opposite," Drummond told reports.
No students enrolled at Michael R. White Elementary School was involved in the altercation. The kids were gathering for an end of the year event.
