A six-year old wakes up and lights a cigarette. He walks outside and is mugged by two young boys who proceed to bribe a policeman. A group of kids is released out of a truck to cross the American border. These are the shocking images in a video created by Mexico Del Futuro, an organization seeking to enact social change in Mexico. The video was originally published in 2012 during Mexico's presidential election as a means of demanding change from presidential candidates: "If this is the future that awaits me i don't want it," says a girl at the end of the video. "Time is up. Mexico has hit rock bottom."
The video has recently resurfaced on Mexican social media following continuing disatisfaction with President Enrique Peña Nieto's inability to enact adequate social reforms in the country. The video is a powerful reminder of some of the greatest problems still facing Mexico: pollution, crime, drugs and illegal migration. The images are all the more powerful as they feature children, reminding us that the biggest victims of political innaction are the future or the country - our children. Crime is one of the biggest concerns facint the country which still reports in excess of 1,500 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants.
In other news, Mr. Peña Nieto is again under fire after yet another media gaff. At a press conference in the state of Guerrero, the Mexican President welcomed the Governor of Yucatan. The website 'Days Since A Peña Nieto Stupidity' is now at 3.
