With most people trying to lose a few pounds after all the eating during the holidays, it’s that time of year that most try to squeeze in some type of a dieting plan into their New Year’s resolution list. But people should be aware that not all diets are created equal.
But would-be dieters should probably think twice before going on a keto diet. According to Business Insider, the keto diet remains one of the worst diets to follow for 2020 based on the ranking made by the US News & World Report.
Keto belongs to a group of eating plans called restrictive diets that also include Whole30, and raw-food diets. These diets usually advocate a high-fat, low-carb eating plan which could be unhealthy in the long run.
But there is one thing that the keto diet is really good at. Based on the US News & World Report rankings, keto ranks third in the Best Fast Weight-Loss Diets category. Keto ties with the Atkins Diet, the Jenny Craig Diet, and the WW (Weight Watchers) Diet for the third spot in this category.
Meanwhile, the Mediterranean Diet is ranked as the best overall diet for 2020. Not only that, but it also bagged that top spot in the Best Diabetes Diets category, is also number 1 in the Best Plant-Based Diets category and is ranked first in the Easiest Diets to Follow category. In addition, the Mediterranean Diet is ranked second in the Best Heart-Healthy Diets list.
The Mediterranean diet takes its inspiration from the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It incorporates a lot of seafood, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and fresh produce into the eating plan. It’s also not as restrictive as people on the diet can even enjoy wine in moderation.
Since the diet is rich in vitamins, fiber and plant-based compounds called polyphenols, the diet can reduce the risk of diabetes and even offer protection against certain kinds of cancer. It can also help in weight loss since it does away with highly processed food items and sugars replacing them instead with vegetables and fish that are dense in nutrients.
The Mediterranean diet also allows food items that contain heart-healthy fats such as salmon, avocado, and olive oil. Thus, it could help lower bad cholesterol levels which explains why the diet is also ranked second in the Best Heart-Healthy Diets list.
