A highly anticipated sporting event each and every year, the Kentucky Derby continuously draws loads of fans at the famed Churchill Downs for each race while millions more watch from their homes.
The 2012 Kentucky Derby was one for the ages as I'll Have Another finished strong down the stretch to slip by Bodemeister.
Promising to continue the great tradition of horse racing, the 139th edition of the Kentucky Derby will take place Saturday, May 4th. Coverage will start at 5pm, EDT with the post position draw on the NBC Sports Network. The official post time is set for 6:24pm, EDT.
While 20 horses will compete in the race, there are 3 that stand out as the Saturday favorites.
Verrazano enters as a popular choice to win the crown. In four career races, Verrazano and trainer Todd Pletcher are a perfect 4-0. A win at the first leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday could set up the potential for a magical 2013.
Winner of three-consecutive races including the 2013 Florida Derby, Orb has become a hot choice amongst racing enthusiasts. With Joel Rosario in command as the three-year-olds jockey, Orb will have a better than good chance to win a fourth-consecutive race.
Verrazano and Orb have surely grown in popularity leading up to this years Kentucky Derby but another horse not be left out of the conversation when it comes to competitors is Goldencents. Winning the Santa Anita Derby this year, Goldencents may have some luck on his side as well.
Goldencents trainer - Doug O'Neill - helped lead I'll Have Another to the 2012 Preakness and Kentucky Derby crowns so a run at the 2013 Derby is not out of the question.
Another possible good luck charm could be Louisville head basketball coach Rick Pitino.
Recently inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, Pitino guided the Cardinals to the 2013 NCAA Basketball championship. He'll now wait to see if his 5% ownership of Goldencents will pay off with another title, this time in the Kentucky Derby.
These three horses may be among a handful of favorites but there are 20 horses vying for the right to be called Kentucky Derby Champion.
Be sure to catch all the action from Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 4th. Coverage of the event will begin at 5pm, EDT on the NBC Sports Network.
