One of the biggest sporting events on the calendar each year, the Kentucky Derby holds a unique place in the world of sports due to the consistent passion, energy and excitement the horse race brings in a time frame of only two minutes. Affectionately referred to as ‘the greatest two minutes in sports,’ the Kentucky Derby – which is held annually at the famed Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky – consistently provides racing fans with some of the most tight-knit action in the professional sports arena.
While a maximum of 20 horses are permitted to participate in the event, the 140th edition of the Kentucky Derby will only see the entry of 19 due to the recent announcement that Pablo Del Monte will not run Saturday. Despite the withdrawal of the 20th horse by the owner’s, Churchill Downs indicated this week that the Derby purse will remain at the initial number of $2,202,800 and not change due to the subtraction of one horse. Pablo Del Monte was scheduled to appear out of the far outside post after Hoppertunity – who is trained by three-time Derby winner Bob Baffert – was listed as a scratch for the race. Even with a reduced field however, the 2014 edition of the race still holds plenty of talent.
The No. 1 spot in the starting gate will now be vacant due to the withdrawals of Hoppertunity and Pablo Del Monte but confidence is not lost among those placed as favorites in the race. Victorious in his last four races under Victor Espinoza, California Chrome will enter the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby as the favorite with 5-2 odds while Wicked Strong (9/1), Danza (10/1), Intense Holiday (10/1) and Ride On Curlin (13/1) round out the top five leaders based on Friday odds. Set to begin at approximately 6:24pm, ET on Saturday, May 3, here’s a look at the complete odds for all 19 horses along with complete viewing options.
