Back in 2011, Katy Perry had it all. A successful career, a dedicated fan base and a happy marriage - or so we thought. Barbara Walters took into consideration all of the musician's accomplishments and landed an interview with her for Walter's famous "10 Most Fascinating People," but things didn't really go according to plan. In advance of the release of her fourth studio album, "PRISM," on Oct. 22, Katy Perry opened up to Billboard about her experience with the veteran journalist. "I shouldn't have done the interview," she admitted. "I was playing Madison Square Garden that same night, and I knew that the end of my marriage was coming. I was just exhausted and stressed."
"I'd prepped everyone that I was running late, but Barbara showed up at the original time anyway," the "Roar" singer continued. "When I got there, I apologized immediately, but then she said to me, 'You know, I've only ever waited for one other person this long, and you know who that person was? Judy Garland. You know how she turned out, right?'" Perry added: "I was like, 'Oh, snap! Yes, bitch!' I think it's the coolest thing that Barbara Walters shaded me. I just couldn't tell her as we were sitting down for a mega-interview, 'Hey, my marriage is falling apart. Give me a break.'"
Just two weeks after the special aired, Russell Brand filed for divorce on Dec. 30, 2011 via text. Katy was devastated, and she revealed it to the world in her song "By the Grace of God" where she confesses she battled suicidal thoughts after her marriage fell apart. "That song is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point. I asked myself, 'Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?'" she said. "All the songs are real-life moments. I can only write autobiographically. I put all the evidence in the music. I tell my fans if they want to know the real truth about stuff, just listen to the songs."
Fortunately, Katy won the battle against her tormenting feelings and continued to make amazing music that we'll be able to enjoy on Oct. 22, when her new album releases. She is looking better than ever (anyone remember her Grammy's dress?) and has found happiness again in her on-again, off-again boyfriend, singer-songwriter John Mayer, who has amazed her with his greatness. "He literally is a genius, as is evident from his songwriting," she said. "I always tell him, 'Darling, you know I'm going to have to give your mind to science after you've passed, because we're going to have to understand how all these sparks work.'"
The talented couple began dating not long after Perry's divorce from Russell became final in February 2012. They broke up earlier this year but soon reunited.
