Katie Couric is finally ready to tie the knot again, this time with 50-year-old John Molner. Couric was widowed back in 1998 when husband Jay Monahan died of colon cancer. The mother of two, Ellie, 22, who just graduated college and Carrie, 17, who is starting her junior year in high school, said that Molner proposed to her over the Labor Day weekend. The two made their relationship public in April 2012 and have reportedly been dating for somewhere around two years. She said in an interview in February that she was surprised she had gone so long without remarrying. "It's actually surprising to me that it has been almost 15 years and I haven't remarried. I think life is more fun when you have someone in your life," Couric told More Magazine. Here's four things you need to know about her prospective husband.
1. He's a financier. Molner, 50, is the head of mergers and acquisitions for Brown Brothers Harriman, the oldest and largest private, which deals in investments and securities, bank in the U.S. Molner graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Trinity College, as well as with honors. He proved to be a successful student at University of Chicago Booth School of Business, also graduating with honors there. "He's really funny and very successful in his own right. In a different line of work. A little more age appropriate," Couric told USA Today.
2. He's six years her junior. The famed TV host is 56 years old and has a history for dating younger men. She previously dated Chris Botti, a trumpeter who was five years younger than her. She also dated entrepreneur Brooks Perlin who was 17 years younger than her. Couric joked with reporters that her known penchant for younger men was due to the fact that she needed someone to stay on her level. "But hey, I've got a lot of energy, you know. I need someone who can keep up with me!" she said.
3. A fancy engagement. Molner popped the question in the cozy, luxurious and beautiful East Hampton, N.Y. He waited until sunset before he asked the question, at which point he presented her with a diamond ring. She told People Magazine that she gave him an extatic yes upon popping the question. She also gave a little tidbit about her taste in men back in 2012, a detail he fits perfectly: "He's great. He's from Chicago. I love Midwesterners!"
4. A scandalous start. When the two went public last April, Molner had a little bit of explaining to do. His 27-year-old ex-girlfriend Jessica Hsu returned with some shocking news to reveal to the press. Molner allegedly cheated on her with Couric, which ended the relationship. "Yes, John cheated on me, That's all I have to say," Hsu said. The couple proceeded carefully and for a while refused to be photographed together, though they started slowly making public appearances at the behest of their mutual friends. A source close to the situation told the New York Daily News last year that the situation had been blown out of proportion and that Molner immediately broke up with Hsu following one date with Couric.
