Prince William and Kate Middleton’s relationship has been widely regarded as a fairytale. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge brought three wonderful children into the family, and the couple has withstood the rumors and issues thrown their way. Despite the remarkable progress that their relationship has gone through, many still talk and theorize about the second breakup they went through in their earlier stages.

William and Kate have been together since their days at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Their honeymoon phase was unfortunately marred by their split in 2007, shocking those who expected the two to eventually tie the knot. “It’s a surprise because it had seemed very stable and very steady,” BBC Royal Correspondent Peter Hunt said at the time.

In the documentary titled “William & Kate: The Journey,” royal editor Duncan Larcombe theorized that the breakup was because of Kate’s family. Her friends allegedly made fun of her family background, particularly her mother Carole’s job as a former air hostess.

“One of the theories of mine is it was because of her family background,” said Larcombe. “One or two people in William’s inner circle may have had that view. They used to say ‘doors to manual’ whenever they saw Kate Middleton.”

Hello Magazine correspondent Judy Wade, on the other hand, believes that it was Kate herself who backed out. She argued that she “might have realized the awful burden she would have taken on” by entering the royal family, especially with the added harassment by the media on her doorstep.

Meanwhile, Christopher Anderson, a royal author, postulates that the reason for their separation was Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall’s handiwork. “Camilla is a bit of a snob,” he said in an interview. “She’s an aristocrat, she has always been moving in Royal circles.”

“She did not look at Kate as someone who was worthy of joining the Royal Family,” explained Anderson. “Kate is the first working-class woman to be accepted into the Royal Family. She is descended from coal miners and her mother was a flight attendant.”

It has been made known, however, that Prince William felt “claustrophobic” because of the relationship, which is why he opted out. Prince Charles then added some pressure, thereby making him choose to either commit to Kate or set her free. William made his choice known to the public by proposing to Kate in 2010.
