Could the royal couple be expecting?

Australian magazine New Idea exclusively reported that Prince William and wife Kate Middleton will be announcing that they will be expecting a heir to the throne.

"After months of pregnancy speculation, close friend Jessica Hay tells New Idea that her old schoolmate Kate has 'wonderful, happy news' to share, with next month tipped as the deadline for the revelation," the magazine reported. "The breaking news follows buzz from royal bump watchers, who speculate Kate's recent weight gain is baby related."

Hay told the magazine that the newlyweds are focused on starting a family.

"It seems very traditional, but of course they'll be happy with boys or two girls, they don't want more," Hay also said. "They've discussed it endlessly and don't want to be older parents."

Hay is reportedly Middleton's middle school roommate and attended the royal wedding in April 2011.

In May, Prince William told ABC's Katie Couric that he is eager to have kids.

"I'm just very keen to have a family and both Catherine and I, you know, are looking forward to having a family in the future," the Duke of Cambridge said. "You won't get anything out of me. Tight lipped."

The couple's first born will be heir to the throne regardless of gender. ABC News reported in May that "last year, the heads of 16 Commonwealth countries agreed to a change in the rules of succession so that first-born children of either gender - rather than only first-born males - can take the throne. (Queen Elizabeth II was only eligible to be sovereign because her father had no male children.) The British Parliament must still amend existing law to make the succession change official."

"Put simply, if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were to have a little girl, that girl would one day be our queen," British Prime Minister David Cameron told reporters last year.
