Residents of Sharon Springs, Kansas were shocked to wake up one morning to find a pasture had been swallowed by a sinkhole. The hole appeared suddenly during the week and now measures 200 feet across at 90 feet deep -- and growing. Residents reported seeing cracks in their land a few days prior to the hole caving in, the Daily Mail reported.
Sheriff Larry Townsend said the monster-sized hole also has cracks around its edges, indicating that it will get bigger in the coming days. The area has been declared dangerous, but the mystery hole has drawn loads of visitors since it first appeared, the Examiner reported. Dalton Hoss, one resident who noticed cracks on his land prior to the development of the hole, has tried to curtain visitors and coax them away for their safety.
It is unclear what caused the hole, but officials believe it wasn't due to manmade structures. The area currently lacks any big infrastructure that could have created the conditions for the hole formation. No injuries have been reported.
"Man had nothing to do with this. This is a God thing," the sheriff stated. "There's no oil well around here, there are no irrigation wells anywhere near. This is something that just happened."
This isn't the first instance of a large sinkhole suddenly appearing in recent months. A woman's car was swallowed by a sinkhole as she was driving in Toledo, Ohio last month. She managed to escape the large chasm. A New Jersey man wasn't so lucky as he was killed by a sinkhole opened beneath him at a warehouse where he worked in May.
