Kalimba became a trending topic on Twitter this afternoon after he tweeted about Rainbow Doritos. The OV7 singer said, "Christians, women, Jews and kids die in great numbers and I don't see them making new Doritos for each one." He then used the hashtags "double standard" and "pure hypocrisy." It is worth noting that Kalimba resides in the City of México, where this past weekend the LGBT community celebrated with Pride parades.
It did not take long for social media users to attack the artist calling him homophobic and recalling that he was previously accused of raping a minor. One user asked: "Do you suggest that the LGBT community doesn't deserve the support because there are other more important causes? Kalimba replied stating, "Not at all. I suggest not to make martyrs out of one community by commercializing it. They are not only their dead, they are everybodies." He later added that he would "raise his voice for ALL the causes of violence, marginalized or attacked communities."
Doritos made the chips available in México to celebrate diversity. On its official website, they brand claims that 100% of the proceeds would go to different foundations helping against discrimination. In the U.S. the Rainbow Doritos were produced for a limited time in 2015. Frito-Lay associated themselves with the It Gets Better Project and supporters who donated $10 to the cause would receive in the mail their own Doritos Rainbows chips bag.
