Justin Bieber used to have the “Prince Of Pop” title all to himself, but that is not the case now. Earlier this month, The Guardian’s weekly magazine, The Observer, recognized Shawn Mendes as the new “Prince Of Pop,” and Bieber was quick to comment on his dethronement.
Mendes posted on Instagram on Sunday the cover for The Observer, showing his new title. Bieber immediately noticed the post and called out the “Treat You Better” singer, initiating an amicable mock war over the social media platform.
“Hmm… Gonna have to break a few more records to dethrone my title there bud (Canadian voice),” Bieber commented. “But if you want we can play hockey for it but I heard you’re a real bender on the ice we could just drop the buckets and tilt for it,” he added.
Apparently, Bieber’s comment was meant to be a joke, in which he intended to play at both his and Mendes’ Canadian nationalities. When fans started to comment back and refer to his remark as shade, he commented again to tell fans to chill.
“There is no competition and it was a playful joke people, relax,” he wrote. “There’s no sides we’re all just here to make dope music. I’m just as competitive as he is so it was just a little playful jargon,” he added.
Bieber rose to international fame in 2010 with his hit song “Baby,” while Mendes did not gain a following until 2013, when his song covers on Vine went viral. As Mendes started to become an international sensation and started to conquer the global entertainment scene, fans also started to pit him against Bieber because of their parallels.
Aside from both Bieber and Mendes being Canadians and both resembling each other physically, their songs also belong to the same genre. Interestingly, it looks like they also have similar taste when it comes to girls.
Before Bieber got back together with Hailey Baldwin and married her in 2018, Mendes briefly dated Bieber’s wife in 2017. Back in March, Mendes made headlines after liking an Instagram post of Bieber showing a sizzling hot Baldwin posing inside a car.
