A teen is in custody following the shooting of a 10-year-old boy at the Juneteenth festival in Ohio, Colombus police said Sunday. The shooting happened at Franklin Park just outside the festival Saturday night. The child's wounds are non-life threatening, ABC 13 reported. Police began for at least two suspect in the shooting at around 7 p.m. Police brought a 15-year-old boy in sometime later and charged him with felonious assault.
Two others may still also be involved. Police have identified the suspect in custody as Lovauntea J. Mickens. There was no additional comment about the boy who was shot, but police said the boy had been stabilized at a local hospital, 10 TV in Ohio reported. Four juveniles were arrested earlier in the day for fighting.
The Juneteenth Festival started as a celebration of the day slavery was abolished in Texas. Bystanders, vendors and attendees expressed shock and sympathy for the boy who was shot. Attendees hope this event will not tarnish the image of the festival, UPI reported.
"Every year they get out here and show out. Now we're not going to have anything we can do that represents the African-American community and it's a disgrace," Columbus resident Benita David said.
