Actor Luis Alberto Villanueva has made shocking declarations to Mexican publication Diario Basta about his friend Julión Álvarez. The two artists had a friendship for several years, and Villanueva revealed that the Mexican regional performer is considered bisexual in their group of friends and the whole town of San Fernando, where Álvarez is from. “Julión would sing on the bus in Tuxtla Gutiérrez when he wasn’t famous,” the actor said.
“Back then everyone called him Julio, because his real name is Julio César. He suffered a lot as a kid, he was discriminated against and bullied. People from his town said he was bisexual because of the way he was, because he was very feminine but his voice was very low. Now it sounds raspier. But that’s why people said he liked men and women,” Villanueva revealed.
He added that they both met in college when they were studying Law, but Julión didn’t finish his degree because he moved to Sinaloa to try his luck with La Banda MS. His friend also said that they would party a lot, until sunrise.
Talking about Julión, Villanueva disclosed that the singer comes from a very humble family. “Where he was from there was a lot of poverty,” he said. “He worked in the field milking cows, planting corn. His parents didn’t have a stable economy. I got to go to his house in San Fernando and it was up in a hill and it was all muddy to get there. Sometimes we ate corn, and sometimes tamales with cheese and cream.”
Nevertheless, Álvarez always seemed to know what he wanted. “Julión would tell me he was going to be a great singer, that he was going to make it far, but people kept making fun of him.” Maybe the constant bullying was what shaped his temper. “He was special, he has a very strong character, he’s bipolar. When he’s in a good mood he’s great, but if you catch him on a bad day, run!” Villanueva told the Mexican publication.
