Judge Rips Florida Medical School Professor Charged with Trafficking Date

A Miami judge ripped into a medical school assistant professor who stands accused of trafficking a date rape drug.

"He should be so embarrassed being here," Judge Mindy Glazer admonished him during his court appearance Friday. "He's a medical doctor, going through all those years of education and committing his life to helping people and to get arrested for this — that's between you, your lawyer and the criminal justice system. Good luck to you, sir."

Dr. Dairon Garcia, a radiologist and assistant professor at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine, was arrested on Thursday after police said he allegedly trafficked gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), a common date rape drug, according to an arrest report obtained by WPLG.

Garcia, 44, faces two first-degree felony charges after customs officials at Miami International Airport intercepted packages containing nearly 7 kg and 5 kg of GBL, respectively, both shipped from France to addresses allegedly associated with Garcia, according to the Miami Police Department report.

The packages were reportedly directed to a duplex owned by Garcia under "Damaga Properties" and another entity called "DG Diagnostics MD LLC." A SWAT team raid and witness statements connected Garcia to the shipments, with text messages supporting his involvement, as reported by WPLG.

Garcia was held on a $15,000 bond before being released Friday evening.

The University of Miami has not yet commented on Garcia's employment status following his arrest.
