Juan Pablo Galavis has been universally panned as 'the worst Bachelor ever.' But we at Latin Times also think that, as the first Latino Bachelor ever, he is a terrible example for Latinos everywhere. He perpetuates unfair stereotypes of the macho Latino lover who is more in love with himself than anyone around him. He seemed unafraid to hurt girls' feelings. He was also often insensitive and homophobic. We hope sincerely that this will not be America's lasting image of Latinos.
1. He's Homophobic. Back in January Juan Pablo made some pretty shocking comments. When asked about the possibility of a gay Bachelor, the Venezuelan replied "there's this thing about gay people... it seems to me, and I don't know if I'm mistaken or not... but they're more 'pervert' in a sense. And to me the show would be too strong... too hard to watch...Obviously people have their husband and wife and kids and that is how we are brought up." No amount of apologizing could get Galavis out of this one.
2. He's Bad Father. Reports emerged earlier that the single father didn't pay child support - for two years! Documents obtained by the National Enquirer reveal that the former soccer star was given an income deduction order from The Florida Department of Revenue’s Child Support Enforcement Program for not paying almost four thousand dollars in child support to his former girlfriend Carla Rodriguez. The Florida Court ordered employers to deduct $243.94 per month for child support.
3. He's Misogynistic. Throughout the series it became pretty clear that Juan Pablo was only interested in one thing when it came to the girls. He is not the romantic Latino we wanted. This was most exemplified with the way he treated Clare: “Clare asked Juan Pablo, ‘Just tell me you love me,’” clearly attempting to get a gage of how he was feeling about her going into the Final Rose Ceremony, the insider says. “And he responded, ‘I really loved f—ing you.’”
4. He's Dumb. It became obvious on the show that Juan Pablo wasn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. “You’ve been thinking too much,” he once cooed to Sharleen, who ultimately left the show on her own accord because there was no “cerebral connection.” She later said that “I wish I were dumber."
5. He's a Womanizer. On the series it was obvious that Juan Pablo was enjoying all the feminine attention a bit too much. But it wasn't enough - apparently he needed some more love off screen. It was said that during a Miami Heat game on Feb. 7, Juan Pablo was seen cuddling and getting way too friendly with Cuban-American singer and model Mayra Verónica. The two reportedly met that night, when the performer stopped by to meet with her agent and was introduced to the Bachelor, who was enjoying the VIP perks of being in the spotlight.
6. He's Offensive. If calling gay people 'perverts' wasn't bad enough, Juan Pablo then went another step by using 'retard' as a pejorative in a Tweet. Just days before the end of the series he retweeted a joke from a fan that read "Not every flower can save love, but a rose can. Not every plant survives thirst, but a cactus can. Not every retard can read, but look at you go, little buddy!"
