With Halloween right around the corner, there is nothing like a villainous vampire to really get the blood pumping, and that's exactly what Jonathan Rhys Meyers is thinking. Meyers, will be the latest actor to try his hand fang at being Count Dracula in NBC’s latest undead series aptly titled “Dracula.” Meyers will channel a very traditional version of Dracula, who has terrified supernatural fans since the F.W. Murnau film “Nosferatu” based on Irish author Bram Stoker’s gothic horror novel “Dracula.” Meyers, also Irish, will sink his teeth into the new role when “Dracula” premieres on October 25 on NBC.
Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, explained just how the network is bringing the spooky story back to its original glory, “In the world of ‘Twilight’ and ‘True Blood’ and all the contemporized vampire stories, we thought we would go back to the original, and the book is still really fresh and really original, and we have an incredible script written by writer Cole Haddon. Despite NBC’s “Dracula” sticking to the vampy story, Count Dracula will be getting a bit Americanized and a whole lot more sexy. Dracula who is known as Alexander Grayson in the series comes to London, posing as an American entrepreneur.
Grayson is seemingly attempting to bring modern science to the Victorian society, bit in reality Dracula is on a vengeful quest against those that betrayed him centuries earlier. While Dracula’s penetration of London high society is mostly about revenge, the undead vampire also falls in love. Dracula’s falls hopelessly in love with a woman who seems to be the reincarnation of his deceased wife, who was burned at the stake centuries ago.
But even though Dracula has a bad boy reputation, Meyers says he feels connected to his new character. “I play the bad guy because I look like one,” Meyers told The New York Post. "I suppose there’s a kind of feral element in me. Its just part of those energies that encompass me.”
