The first presidential debate turned into a mess on Tuesday night as Donald Trump and Joe Biden made slashing attacks on each other, leaving moderator Chris Wallace almost completely unable to control the discussion. At one point, Democrat Joe Biden even told a raging Trump to “shut up” as the incumbent president repeatedly interrupted his answers.
Joe Biden and Donald Trump called each other names and engaged in a constant cross-talk during the debate, leading to the breakdown of what should have been an orderly discussion. Twenty minutes into the debate, Biden told Trump, “Would you shut up, man?” as Trump interrupted him while he was talking about the Supreme Court.
About 15 minutes later, Biden asked Trump to zip it again as the Republican president tried to interrupt him while he was discussing the COVID-19 pandemic. “Would you just slush for a minute?” he said.
Biden came to the debate armed with his own insults against Trump, calling him a “liar,” “clown” and “racist.” During one exchange he even told Trump he’s “the worst president that America has ever had.”
For his part, Trump falsely accused Biden’s son Hunter of getting a dishonorable discharge from the Navy. He also called Biden a socialist and yoked him to a “manifesto” of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, accusing him of supporting the Green New Deal on the environment.
Trump did not reveal when he would make his personal taxes public but claimed he had paid “millions of dollars in taxes” since assuming office. He also tried to skirt the question when asked if he would condemn white supremacist groups. “Proud boys—stand back, stand by, but I’ll tell you what, somebody’s got to do something about Antifa and the left because this is not right-wing problem. This is a left-wing problem,” he added.
Jake Tapper of CNN called the debate a “hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a train wreck.” The cross-talk happened so many times that Wallace had to step in to stop Trump from interrupting Biden but his efforts were mostly fruitless. Joe Biden spokeswoman Symone Sanders also said, “it was just a lot of chaos from Donald Trump.”
