One of the most recognizable figures in wrestling is set to return to competitive action.

Suffering a heart attack back in September of 2012, Jerry 'The King' Lawler will return to the ring after making a miraculous recovery, according to the Miami Herald.

Known primarily for his announcing abilities, the 63-year-old Lawler collapsed on-air during a 2012 live broadcast of WWE Raw in Montreal after competing in a tag team match with superstar Randy Orton.

Lawler was his usual jubilant-self while serving as color commentator to WWE play-by-play announcer Michael Cole before the incident. Luckily for Lawler, WWE ringside doctor Michael J. Sampson was sitting near the announcers table and was quickly able to provide CPR to the wrestling legend.

Fully recovered from the heart attack that sent shockwaves across the wrestling world, The King will now join Dory Funk Jr. for a tag team match set to launch on May 25th.

Physically able to set foot in the ring for the first time since the incident, Lawler said his only mission was to compete once again.

"The one thing I've not done since the heart attack is get back into the ring and wrestle," Lawler told WMC-TV. "I certainly do miss the wrestling and I do want to go back and do it some more."

The opportunity to return to the WWE on a competitive basis presented itself recently when Lawler announced he would join 72-year-old wrestling Hall of Famer Dory Funk Jr. Pairing the two superstars together will certainly bring in loads of publicity for a sport that has never struggled when it comes to fans and television ratings.

A fan-favorite, Lawler began his professional wrestling career in 1970, competing on multiple circuits and gaining immense notoriety wherever he went.

Lawler started his WWE career in 1992 as a broadcaster for the program 'WWF Superstars of Wrestling.' With unbelievable charisma and energy behind the microphone, the Memphis, Tennessee native was an instant success in the broadcast booth.

With the ultimate seal of approval, Lawler was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007.

As the sport continues to grow headlined by superstars including CM Punk, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Randy Orton, Lawler is still very much a part of the WWE's success.

It will certainly be a wonderful moment for the sport and its fans when Lawler returns to the ring come May 25th, 2013.

Welcome back Jerry!
